Naval Shipboard Servo Valve Repair

Independent third-party repair of commercial servo valves on naval shipboard hydraulics: ship steering gear, deck winches, and shipboard maintenance equipment. Bodies are commercial Moog, Parker, and Rexroth.

N100 Where these valves sit

Four naval application contexts

The servo valves on naval hydraulics are commercial Moog, Parker, and Rexroth bodies. Below are the four common contexts seen at the bench.

N110

Ship steering gear

Servo valves on rudder hydraulic actuator control loops across surface combatants and auxiliaries.

N120

Carrier arresting gear

Servo valves on aircraft carrier arresting-gear hydraulic systems for cable-tension and deceleration control.

N130

Marine steering & control

Commercial electrohydraulic valves used in marine steering and control hydraulics. Naval qualification and shipyard process control stay with the customer.

N140

Deck equipment

Servo and proportional valves on shipboard cranes, winches, RAS hardware, and deck-handling hydraulics.

N200 What NC Servo does

Component-level repair on naval valves

Each unit is opened, inspected, and rebuilt at the component level. Failed parts come from inventory or off donor units. Bench verification before ship.

N210

Pilot stage rebuild

Torque motor pilot stages, nozzle flapper, and pilot trim cleaned and aligned against documented procedures.

N220

Spool & sleeve service

Spool wear, contamination scoring from saltwater incursion events, and lap restoration on shipboard valve bodies.

N230

Coil & feedback work

Burned coil rebuild, feedback wire repair, and LVDT verification on closed-loop bodies. Salt-water exposure causes coil insulation faults.

N240

Bench testing

Hagenbusch and older-style hydraulic stands. Frequency response, hysteresis, and step response data available for purchase.

N250

Donor parts service

Stock is hit or miss, but legacy hardware shows up often enough that we can pull from past jobs when we have a match. Ask about a specific part number.

N260

Repair scope

Bench-level component work on the valve hardware. Naval qualification, shipyard processes, and ITAR-controlled handling stay with the customer or contractor.

N400 Common faults

What usually shows up on naval valves

Shipboard servo valves run in salt-laden environments with continuous duty cycles. Failures fall into the categories below. Recognize one? A part number is enough to start.

Fault log — typical intake
Pilot stage Torque motor coil burnout, nozzle plugging from contamination, and null shift after long service. Drives erratic steering response or arresting-gear behavior.
Spool and body Spool wear, contamination scoring on lap surfaces, sticky spool action, and internal leakage past the spool.
Coil and feedback Coil insulation faults from salt exposure, feedback wire wear, and LVDT signal drift on closed-loop bodies.
Connector and electrical Damaged connectors, salt-water ingress at connector boots, and corrosion on connector pins after extended shipboard service.

N500 Workflow

From part number to ship-back

Same four-step path through the shop whether the unit is a steering-gear servo or a deck-equipment proportional valve.

N510

Get in touch

Call or email with the part number, equipment context, and a photo of the nameplate if it helps.

N520

Bench review

Tech opens the unit, inspects pilot and spool, and runs it on the hydraulic stand to confirm what failed.

N530

Cost & approval

We call back with the cost and a rough turnaround. Nothing is started without your sign-off.

N540

Repair, test, ship

Failed components replaced from inventory or off donors, the valve verified under pressure, and shipped back.

N600 Common questions

Common questions about naval valve repair

Application-specific questions. For brand-specific FAQs, see the dedicated brand page above.

What types of naval servo valves do you repair?
Commercial servo valves and proportional valves used in naval shipboard hydraulics: ship steering gear, deck cranes, winches, and shipboard equipment. Bodies are commercial Moog, Parker, and Rexroth components.
Do you repair carrier arresting gear servo valves?
We repair commercial servo and proportional valve bodies regardless of the system they came out of. Suitability for return to arresting-gear or any shipboard service is determined by the customer or Navy authority. The valves themselves are commercial hardware and come through the bench for rebuild.
Do you handle ITAR or classified work?
No. The servo valves on naval platforms are commercial hydraulic components. NC Servo handles bench-level repair on the hardware. ITAR-controlled handling, security clearances, and classified processing remain with the customer or contractor.
Do you work with Navy shipyards and fleet maintenance?
Commercial servo valves used in shipboard hydraulics can come through the bench for component-level repair from any customer who handles the shipboard side themselves: shipyards, fleet-maintenance facilities, and defense contractors. NC Servo is independent and not affiliated with the Navy or any contractor.
Do you provide on-site service?
No. Bench repair is the standard service: ship the valve to Westland, MI for rebuild and testing, then reinstall after return.
How long does a repair usually take?
Lead time varies job to job, partly because parts are often pulled from donor boards. Give us a call with the part number and the situation.
What is the warranty?
One year on parts and workmanship for repairs and rebuilt units. Standard exclusions apply for contamination, improper installation, and out-of-spec operation. Saltwater contamination is a common warranty exclusion – flushing the hydraulic system before reinstalling a repaired valve is recommended.

Naval valve down? Send a part number

Give us a call or send a part number with the platform and the symptom. We’ll check the donor pool, suggest a rebuilt match if we have one, and walk through repair or cross-brand options if we don’t.
